Taste of Summertime

When you hear the term “from scratch,” does that make you run to the kitchen, grab an apron and a whisk? Or do you feel the tension in your neck followed by a flip of your stomach and an image of spending hours, no, make that days in the kitchen to create something that just may not taste right? We have the easiest recipe today that will make your grandma proud. So grab an apron and let’s start.  We’re about to capture summer in a glass.

Lemonade comes close to being the easiest recipe on the planet to make and one that you can easily “wow” your guests with.  These days, so many lemonades in the grocery store, from the powders to the frozen concentrates, are made with added chemicals and colors. When you make your own recipe – you will use all natural ingredients – (just three!), you will get to control how sweet or how tart the final product is, and your guests will be so impressed.

Simple ingredients and a few minutes of time is all this recipe takes.  You will need:

  • 1 ¼  cups freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 6 large lemons)
  • ¾ cup superfine sugar (you can also whir regular sugar around in the blender)
  • 5 cups water
  • 1 cup ice

Squeeze your lemons. Combine lemon juice and sugar in the blender on high for at least a full minute. If you prefer a tarter beverage, start with 1/2 cup of sugar. Add water and blend. Add ice and blend one last time. Cheers! Here’s to a lazy afternoon on the porch.

Kitchen tip: rolling your lemons on the counter while gently pressing down, will encourage the lemons to release more juice.

Oh yeah, did I mention you can make this ahead? Feel free to make it in advance and store covered in the refrigerator. Just be careful, it’s guaranteed to disappear quickly.
