Back to the Forest to Plant Saplings

Back to the Forest to Plant Saplings

Our community of Cajolá is located in the western highlands of Guatemala, an area known for lush forests, set between mountains and volcanoes dotted with Maya villages and towns. Over the years people here have relied on the forests for firewood, cutting down trees to fuel stoves as well as fires for ceremonies and for warmth. Over time, the forests have been thinned out. With fewer trees, springs are disappearing and the habitat for animals, birds and insects is at risk. Our yearly community planting event aims to ensure that these important resources continue to thrive.

For every order placed on the website, Mayamam Weavers commits to donating a tree sapling to be planted during our annual planting event. Customers also have an opportunity to purchase additional saplings for $1 each. Last year Mayamam Weavers donated 1300 saplings. This year we’re excited to nearly double that number! 2036 saplings were donated and planted in June. There were two days of planting, one for Grupo Cajolá, the community improvement group that Mayamam Weavers is a part of and one for the preschool children and their families.

Planting days begin at a local nursery to pick up oak, cypress and white pine saplings. This year a member of the Alcadia Auxiliares joined the group. The Alcadia Auxiliares are the elders of the community that oversee the protection of the communal lands. These lands are particularly at risk as families cut down trees to extend their farmland. After a lengthy hike up with a few breaks to rest here and there, the groups spread out to find just the right spot, sharing shovels and pick axes to loosen the earth.  Once the saplings have all been planted, it is time to enjoy a picnic with friends and family and enjoy the surroundings.

All Maya people have understood the importance of taking care of Mother Earth for hundreds of centuries. There is a reciprocal relationship between humans and the earth and everything is connected. Planting tree saplings is one way to take care of the earth and replenish her resources. We look forward to next year’s planting together with your help.
